WordPress 101 - Upgrading to Version 2.7

December 26th, 2008 Posted in Blog Writing

WordPress 2.7 was released earlier this month and bloggers all over the web rushed to upgrade. This is a relatively quick upgrade, considering WordPress just went from version 2.6.3 to version 2.6.5 in late November. For those paying attention, WordPress skipped version 2.6.4. This is due largely in part to a security glitch and the fact that some imposters were advertising a version 2.6.4 that never existed.

To be honest, WordPress 2.7 looks like a fantastic upgrade. It was inspired by jazz themes and makes it easy for you to customize your blog and the way the admin area shows. There’s a feature that allows you to search for and install plugin features directly from your admin page and another that allows you to reply to comments directly from your dashboard. The key is the ability to remain flexibile and improvise, and WordPress 2.7 gives bloggers exactly that.

While we haven’t upgraded ourselves yet, version 2.7 is receiving some mixed reviews. One of the biggest cosmetic changes is that the toolbar, which has forever been on the top of your screen, is now on the left hand side of the page. This isn’t something that should cause anyone grief, but let’s face it - the toolbar is at the top of the screen on almost every single software program we use, both online and off. Why should we have to get used to a new layout?

The folks at PlanetOZH have released a new feature for your WordPress platform called the Admin Drop Down Menu plugin. Simply install the plugin and your menu bar links will magically appear at the top of your page again. You can even customize the color scheme if doing so makes you happy.

Anyone trying to make money writing or blogging can appreciate the need for the best platforms and technology available. You’ll find the new platform is easy to use and customize so that you’re able to blog YOUR way all the time. With all of the features WordPress 2.7 has to offer, there’s really no reason NOT to upgrade.
