Vocabulary Check: Historic vs. Historical
Some of the silliest mistakes you’ll make in your freelance writing projects will have to do with the improper use of grammar. While a few will be honest mistakes, others will likely stem from an improper understanding of how certain words are supposed to be used. Let’s take a look at a few examples.
Historic vs. Historical
A historical event is one that happened in the past. It is part of history, regardless of whether or not it was a remarkable or memorable event. A historic event is unique and stands apart from the rest. The bombing of Pearl Harbor or the shooting of John F. Kennedy were both historical and historic events.
Lay vs. Lie
This one is tough and no matter what we do the American public may never get this one straight. The problem is that the word “lay” is a conjugated version of the word “lie” as well as it’s own word. In short, to lie means you are going to rest or recline in a horizontal position (lie, lay, lain, lying depending on whether you’re in the present, past, present perfect, or present continuous). To lay means you are going to place or put something in a certain place (lay, laid, have laid, or laying depending on your tense).
Demons vs. Daemons vs. Daimons
Alright, I added this one to throw you off. Each of these represents a different spelling representing different types of divine spirits, though which you choose would depend on whether or not you were Pagan, Christian, or speaking Old English. The daimon spelling does usually represent a “belevolent” or kinder demon while the daimon spelling refers to something more like a guiding angel or spirit. These spelling are usually used to differentiate when the writer doesn’t want the word demon to automatically bring visions of evil spirits.
Keep a small notebook on hand at all times and take notes when questionable word uses arise. You’ll quickly build yourself a valuable reference resource while at the same time enhancing your vocabulary skills. Both will soon translate into your writing.
