Utah State University Offers Free Writing Courses
Choosing freelance writing as your career path may have been a difficult decision. While it’s certainly possible to become a successful freelance writer without any formal education in the area of writing it definitely won’t hurt to get a class or two under your belt. Fortunately there are a few places online that allow writers to take advantage of free classes. One such place is Utah State University.
Utah State University currently offers three free courses through what is known as their OpenCourseWare program. They courses are offered online, allow you the opportunity to study at your own pace, and are free. You don’t even have to register in advance before beginning.
Intro to Writing: Academic Prose
The Intro to Writing: Academic Prose course was designed for students who were originally supposed to attend classes up to three times per week. You can download this course in its entirety and work at your own pace. You won’t be graded or earn credits, but you’ll have the opportunity to work through the course in much the same way as a university student would, picking up new skills along the way.
Intermediate Research Writing
Formally known as Intermediate Writing: Research Writing in a persuasive mode, this course speaks for itself. You’ll learn a series of critical thinking and reading skills that you’ll need in order to complete persuasive writing projects. These include but certainly aren’t limited to how to find topics that are meaningful and fun, how to identify logical fallacies, how to develop a true working bibliography, and the truth about research ethics.
Technology for Professional Writers
Technology for Professional Writers is an excellent course for those who already have strong writing skills or a great degree but don’t know enough about technology to land a decent job. The course promises to go over a variety of software applications and tools designed to let you take your writing to the next level. The good news is that they’re easier to learn than the skill of writing, so you’re in for a fun and stress-free treat with this program.
Check out one or two of these courses in your spare time. It may seem difficult to find time to study, but carving an hour or two into your week will pay off in the end.
