Emails & Topic Ideas

February 17th, 2009 Posted in Freelancing

Do you receive a number of emails and comments after you write articles or blog posts? Do you regularly respond to each and every email until, ultimately, you’ve got a string of a dozen or more conversations going on in your email inbox at the same time? What a mess!

At some point you’re going to have to recognize when a conversation has gone on long enough and needs to be ended. Sometimes your readers will email you for additional advice, which you may or may not want to give.

Let’s say, for example, you’re writing a niche blog on a specific subject in an effort to sell a product. What if someone emails you to ask follow up questions about one of your articles? Will you answer them? I hope so. But what will you do when that person continues to ask questions? Will you act as a consultant? I should hope not.

As a freelance writer you should constantly be looking for your next source of inspiration. Your email inbox is an excellent place to find things to write about. You can turn a string of emails into an article about “commonly asked questions,” or you might receive a newsletter featuring a topic your readers might appreciate seeing you explore.

Keep your eyes open and you’ll be surprised at the subject and topic ideas you may stumble upon. They’re in emails, newspapers, magazines, on the sides of your cereal box, and maybe even on your local bulletin board. Be creative and you’ll never run out of things to write about!
