Time Management Mishaps

January 15th, 2009 Posted in Freelancing

It doesn’t matter how hard you try or how explicit your to-do list is - you will inevitably have a day where nothing goes your way. I’ve had a few of those this week.

It really is OK to have a day where nothing seems to go your way. Maybe your printer died, your internet connection went down, your laptop power cord disappeared, or your car wouldn’t start. While the aggravation seemed painful at the time, the world didn’t exactly come to an end, either.

The trick is in whether or not you can effectively bounce back from these setbacks. Remain calm, and take some time to write out and evaluate your to-do list. Organize your tasks from highest priorty to lowest and then get to work with a clear vision.

Even worse, however, is when you don’t really have an excuse for not writing. We all have days where we wake up, sit in front of the computer, and immediately begin procrastinating. Unfortunately, procrastinating isn’t going to help you to make money writing, so it’s something you’ll need to overcome rather quickly.

The other day I ran across an old post over at CopyBlogger. It talked about time management and really focused on the procrastinators in the group. I highly recommend you check ou tthe post Time Is Not on Your Side: Time Management Tips for Writers. Scroll down to the middle of the post and take the time waster test. Pretty soon you’ll have a clear understanding of just how much time you waste by procrastinating (though I hope you aren’t using this test as an excuse to procrastinate).

Remember, everyone has a bad day every once in a while and that’s completely normal. The problem occurs when you have bad day after bad day for no apparent reason. If that’s the case, it’s time to review your schedule to see what you might be doing wrong.
