Poetry Contests with April Deadlines

March 27th, 2009 Posted in Writing Contests

I’m back again with a few poetry contests with upcoming April deadlines. Entering a contest is a great way to gain exposure for your work, regardless of whether or not you win. You’ll earn valuable experience in the field of writing and, if you’re lucky, maybe even get some feedback from the editors.

You’ll have to act fast if you’d like to enter the Maurice English Poetry Award competition. This contest is open to anyone who published a book of poetry in 2008. The deadline to submit your entry is April 1st. The prize is $3,000 cash and a book reading in Philadelphia. Visit WritersMarket.com for more information on how to enter.

The Spoon River Poetry Review Editor’s Prize competition has a deadline of April 15th. Poets are encourage to send three original unpublished poems. The grand prize is $1,000 and two additional winners will receive $100 each.

The Iowa Poetry Prize competition runs until April 30th and is sponsored by the University of Iowa Press each year. Both new and established poets are encourage to enter by submitting a manuscript ranging between 50 and 150 pages. The winner will have his manuscript published under a “standard royalty agreement.”

Anyone looking to grow his freelance writing career should consider entering a contest every once in a while. There’s no better way of getting your name and work in front of a publisher or editor who might not otherwise give you the time of day!
