Absolutely essential. I make sure I post on my blog at least four times a week when I have net access. Frequency is important - I get frustrated with writers who publish a new entry every few months: what's the point?. I have just a few people following and it's inspiring to feel part of that community. Mostly I post what I'm up to - "Whew, managed to complete a first draft today" - or general mutterings or pointers to publications; nothing too earth-shattering, just conversational.
