3 References Every New Writer Needs

December 31st, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Writing References

I have a litany of freelance writing reference materials in my home office, and will certainly recommend many of them to aspiring writers as time goes on. Looking forward into the New Year, however, I realized that there were three books on my desk that I would recommend every writer have on his or her desk at all times. Here they are:

Writing for Quick Cash: Turn Your Way with Words into Real Money, by Loriann Hoff Oberlin

This is an incredible book. My fiance gave me this one for Christmas and I was astounded when I started flipping through the pages and saw how valuable this resource would be for new writers. Loriann Hoff Oberlin covers everything from finding and organizing your writing space to developing your own voice and finding the right type of market for your writing. It’s a must-have reference, especially if you’re just getting started in the field.

Finding Content Ideas

December 29th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Content Writing

Hopefully you haven’t hit a wall with your writing at this point in your career, but there comes a time when every great writer has to sit back and wonder - “Do I have anything left to say?”

Chances are you do have new things to say but haven’t found the proper inspiration, but what does a writer or blogger do in the meantime? Here are a few places you can look for your next blog or article topic idea.

Utilize Keyword Tools

There are a few popular keyword tools available on the net today, including Word Tracker and Google AdSense. Using keyword tools is an excellent idea for those looking to make money from freelance writing. You’ll be able to quickly identify popular keywords and then do a bit of quick research to write an article or blog post catering to your specific niche with the knowledge that you’re using a keyword people are already searching for.

Review Your Current Content

Everything old is new again, right? What I mean is that you may have written something over the past few months that needs updating. Perhaps you wrote a current event piece that needs a follow-up. Maybe you wrote a resource list that needs to be updated with current information. Updating old content will not only keep your blog or website active but show your readers you’re keeping up with current events or your industry.

Visit Your Sister Sites

Most writers and bloggers were avid fans of blogs in the same niche before starting their own blogs. Take a look at some of the things your fellow bloggers and webmasters are writing about. You shouldn’t steal their ideas, but you’ll definitely find an angle or inspiration for an article you hadn’t thought of before.

Trust me when I say a serious writer never really runs out of topics to write about. Sometimes you just need a short break or a shove in the right direction. Be patient, and you’ll be back to your regular writing schedule in no time flat!

Productive Email Checking

Most freelance writers advise not checking your email throughout the day. Email usually ranks pretty high on the average person’s “Top 10″ list of distractions, but have you ever thought about whether or not checking your email is really going to destroy your work plan for the day?

I personally use my email to break up the day. The email browser is always open and I check it between projects or tasks. This helps me to take a break from the project I’m working on while making sure I’m up to speed but (contrary to popular belief) I don’t let my email consume me.

Freelance Switch Looking for Writers

One of our favorite fellow freelance writing blogs, the Freelance Switch, announced on Wednesday that it is looking for contributors. They have some pretty stringent submission guidelines, but if your guest post is accepted you’ll be paid a cool $60.

The folks at Freelance Switch are looking for expert articles relating to freelance writing. They should be written in a style that suits the web, and be informational and resourceful (how-to articles are great). They also love linkbait articles, which are excellent content for blogs and websites.

WordPress 101 - Upgrading to Version 2.7

December 26th, 2008 | No Comments | Posted in Blog Writing

WordPress 2.7 was released earlier this month and bloggers all over the web rushed to upgrade. This is a relatively quick upgrade, considering WordPress just went from version 2.6.3 to version 2.6.5 in late November. For those paying attention, WordPress skipped version 2.6.4. This is due largely in part to a security glitch and the fact that some imposters were advertising a version 2.6.4 that never existed.

To be honest, WordPress 2.7 looks like a fantastic upgrade. It was inspired by jazz themes and makes it easy for you to customize your blog and the way the admin area shows. There’s a feature that allows you to search for and install plugin features directly from your admin page and another that allows you to reply to comments directly from your dashboard. The key is the ability to remain flexibile and improvise, and WordPress 2.7 gives bloggers exactly that.
